Feb 9, 2019, 5:32 PM | Updated: 9:21 pm

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah Jazz blew away the San Antonio Spurs 125-105 in a rare matinee matchup.

With the win, the Jazz advanced to 32-24 on the season and passed the Spurs for sole possession of sixth place in the Western Conference standings.

Jazz Play Strong Second, Fourth Quarter

Led by eight points in the opening period by DeMar DeRozan, the Spurs took an early 24-23 advantage on the Jazz.

In the second quarter, the Jazz turned it on big time, outscoring San Antonio 39-24 in the period. Royce O’Neale was spectacular in the second, scoring nine points on 3-for-3 shooting from the 3-point line. Rudy Gobert was also a force in the second period as the Jazz as a team, outscored the Spurs 22-2 in the paint in that quarter.

At the half, the Jazz had their largest lead of the first half at 14 with a 62-48 advantage.

The third quarter looked a lot like the first, with the Spurs outscoring the Jazz 27-24, led by six points in the period by DeRozan. Donovan Mitchell countered with 7 poitns in the period to keep Utah ahead 86-75 going into the fourth.

As has become his style in his young NBA career, Mitchell closed out the Spurs in the fourth quarter by scoring 8 points in the period, on 3-of-6 shooting with three assists.

The win gave the Jazz a 2-1 series win over the Spurs in the two teams’ final meeting of the regular season.

Key Stats

Six Jazzmen finished the game in double-figure scoring. Gobert turned a double-double with 21 poins and 13 rebounds. Derrick Favors also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Mitchell added 23 points.

O’Neale tied his season-high with 17 points while also knocking down four 3-pointers on four attempts.

As a team, the Jazz shot 52.2 percent from the field in the victory.

Gobert Dunk Counter

Coming into the matinee matchup with San Antonio, Gobert was just behind Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo for second place on the dunks leaderboard for the season. Antetokounmpo had 197 slam dunks to 194 by Gobert. In the win over the Spurs, Gobert threw down five to take a slight lead now at 199 dunks.

Next Up

The Jazz will hit the road for a brief one-game road trip to face the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on TNT and will be the last Jazz game before the All-Star break.
