LA JOLLA, Calif. – Growing up in Rose Park, Tony Finau idolized Tiger Woods. Dreaming of the day he would be able to compete against the greatest golfer of his lifetime.
Well, Finau has been competing against Tiger Woods the last few years and Thursday, in round one of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, Tony was paired with his idol for the first time in his career.
Finau handled the crowds and the pressure of playing in the same group as Tiger just fine. Finishing round one with a three under 68. One shot better than Tiger.
Finau picked up his first birdie of the day on the par 3, third. 203 yards, Tony stuck it a foot away from the hole and drained the birdie putt.
Next hole, the par four fourth, Finau’s approach ended up 18 feet away. He would step up and drop that putt for his second straight birdie.
On the par three eighth hole, Finau’s tee shot ended up on the short rough about 30 feet from the hole. Tony chipped in for his third birdie on the front nine.
Finau’s only bogey of the round came on the par three 16th when his tee shot fond the native area and he couldn’t get up and down for par.
Had a lot of fun out there and this certainly added to it 🐤. The crowds were awesome, thanks for all of the support. @FarmersInsOpen pic.twitter.com/ZjpjblSMsq
