BOISE, Idaho – For the final time in a 38-year career, BYU football broadcast color analyst Marc Lyons has signed off.

It was announced in August that this season would the final one on in the radio broadcast booth and Friday’s Famous Idaho Potato Bowl was the final game of Lyons’ swan song season.

Knowing that this year would be his last, Lyons said that every game this year has been meaningful.

“I’ve really had every week to prepare for this one this season. So every week this season, I’ve made an effort to make it pleasurable, fun,” said Lyons to BYUtv prior to the bowl game on Friday.

As for how he approached each game, Lyons said it was a lot like ‘coach speak.’

“This is just another game,” said Lyons.

But when he signed off for the last time, Lyons was emotional, something he said he knew he would be.

As a player, Lyons played quarterback prior to the golden era-LaVell Edwards days at BYU from 1965-69. Once he picked up the radio headset in 1980, he saw and described some of the ultimate highs in the programs history. Highlights for Lyons include calling the 1984 national championship season, 31 bowl games and seeing or calling around 536 BYU football games.

“It’s just been life changing for me, it’s been a dream. To have been able to hang on for 38 years and be a part of BYU football, still be a part of the game, try to relevant as to what’s happening in football today, man alive,” exclaimed Lyons to BYUtv. “If you’re a football junkie, it’s been great, been to so many stadiums, I just can’t describe in words.”

Lyons Speaks To KSL News Radio
