Jazz Lose In Close Game To Miami, 102-100

Dec 2, 2018, 6:46 PM | Updated: Dec 3, 2018, 11:08 am

MIAMI, Fla. – The Utah Jazz missed out on a perfect 3-0 record on their road trip with a narrow 102-100 loss to the Miami Heat.

The Jazz set a season-high in scoring for a single quarter in the first period by taking a 35-27 lead. They started the game on a 20-5 run but Miami battled back thanks to a barrage of threes to cut the deficit to just eight points at the quarter’s end.

As hot as the Jazz started the first was as cold as they began the second as they went over eight minutes without a point. The Jazz who led by 19 at one point, saw their big lead evaporate at the hands of a 20-0 run by Miami. Fortunately for Utah, Miami also went cold in the second and the Jazz took a slight 55-53 lead into the halftime break.

It was back and forth action in the third as the Heat passed the Jazz and took an 80-77 lead into the final period.

A Dramatic Finish

The Jazz reeled off a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter to retake the lead before Miami’s Josh Richardson snapped the streak with a three to tie the game at 91-all.

After more back and forth play, Ricky Rubio tied the game at 100 with a clutch three.

After a stop, Donovan Mitchell’s layup didn’t fall and the Heat got the ball back.

Rudy Gobert was called for a foul after stopping Dwayne Wade at the hoop with 3.2 seconds remaining. Wade received free throws and drained them both to take a 102-100 lead.

Though his look at the basket was clean, Mitchell’s three was no good at the buzzer to end Utah’s hopes of a dramatic victory.

By The Numbers

The game featured 17 lead changes and 16 ties.

Rubio led the Jazz with 23 points as all five starters finished in double-figures. Gobert finished with a 12-point, 18-rebound double-double. It was a season high in rebounds for Gobert.

Hassan Whiteside had a monster game for the Heat with 23 points and 20 rebounds.

Next Up

After a three game road trip, the Jazz will return home to host San Antonio Tuesday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on NBATV.
