BYU Snaps Two-Game Skid With Win Over UMass 35-16

FOXBORO, Mass. – The BYU Cougars were able to get revenge with a 35-16 win over UMass at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. They snapped their two-game losing streak and are one win closer to becoming bowl eligible.

The Cougars lost to the Minutemen last season 16-10 at home.

BYU quarterback Zach Wilson threw 167 yards and two touchdowns, adding 8 carries for 53 yards on the ground.

UMass quarterback Ross Comis had 183 passing yards while running the ball 13 times for 29 yards and one touchdown.

Another Slow Start

The Minutemen started the game with a 20-yard field goal and a two-yard touchdown run by running back Marquis Young to give UMass a 10-0 lead with 4:12 left in the opening quarter.

BYU head coach Kalani Sitake talked about what he told his team.

“We just reminded our guys to do their jobs. We were sick of not doing well.”

BYU Answered Back

After trailing, the Cougars responded with Wilson connecting with wide receiver Talon Shumway on two touchdowns, one towards the end of the first and second quarters.

Running back Matt Hadley started the second half with a two-yard touchdown run to give BYU a 21-10 lead early in the third quarter.

Wide receiver Aleva Hifo scored two touchdowns in a five minute span late in the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth quarter to seal BYU’s fifth win of the season.

“If we can stay consistent for 60 minutes, we can be a really explosive offense,” Sitake said after the game.

The Cougars had 388 total yards of offense, including 221 yards on the ground. Hadley led the rushing attack with 69 yards.

Up Next

BYU improved to 5-5 and will return to LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday, November 17. They will face New Mexico State on senior day with kickoff at 8:15 p.m. on ESPN2.
