Corner Canyon running back Caden Johnson celebrates the game-winning touchdown against Olympus in the 5A UHSAA Semifinal football tournament at Rice Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah on November 9, 2018.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Corner Canyon Chargers punched their ticket to their first ever 5A state championship game with a 20-15 win over Olympus.

A game that was controlled by the defense for most of the game as both teams turned the ball over eight times combined.

Corner Canyon running back Caden Johnson scored the game-winning touchdown on a one-yard run with 1:55 left in the game.

Eight Turnovers

The Chargers committed three turnovers, one fumble and two interceptions but Olympus did not capitalize on any of the miscues.

Olympus had five turnovers, three interceptions and two fumbles. Corner Canyon scored one touchdown off of turnovers.

Corner Canyon head coach Eric Kjar wasn’t happy with the amount of turnovers they committed.

“We made a lot of mistakes, but we did just enough to win.”

Scoring Drought

After Olympus had a 15-14 halftime lead, neither team scored until the Chargers punched in their game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Olympus started the game with a 42-yard touchdown run from running back Tommy Poulton in the first quarter.

Corner Canyon tied the game at 7 on a 15-yard pass from quarterback Cole Hagen threw his only touchdown pass of the game to wide receiver John Mitchell. Hagen finished with 220 yards passing.

Buried near their own end zone, Chargers’ Caden Johnson mis-handled a snap and recovered the ball in their end zone for a safety.

Corner Canyon answered with a 3-yard run by Austin Bell to give the Chargers the lead.

Just before halftime, Noah Bennee caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jackson Frank. Bennee had four catches for 109 yards. Frank added 101 yards through the air.

Corner Canyon will play Skyridge in the 5A championship. The game will be played on Friday, November 16 at Rice Eccles Stadium.
