Aggies Eyeing Perfect Record At Home

LOGAN, Utah – With a win this week against San Jose State, the Utah State Aggies will have accomplished something done only three times before in program history: go 6-0 at home.

Over 100 years had passed since the first and second time that Utah State had set that particular mark in a single season. The Aggies achieved the milestone for the first time in 1907 as part of a 7-0 season under head coach Fred Walker. Granted, the competition wasn’t like it is now. That year, the Aggies picked wins against Ogden High School and Salt Lake High School as well as a 100-0 win over a team known as Crimsons.

It wasn’t until 2012, when Gary Andersen was running the show as head coach that the Aggies won a half dozen games without a loss. That flawless home schedule was highlighted by 27-20 overtime win over the University of Utah.

In 2014, Aggies went 6-0 again, this time under current head coach Matt Wells. The schedule included a rare appearance at Maverik Stadium by an ACC opponent, Wake Forest. Utah State beat up on the Demon Deacons in a 36-24 victory.

Wells Wants To Set The Mark Again

Although he’s already part of a special group of head coaches that have led Aggie teams to the 6-0 mark at home, Wells wants to do it again on senior night on Saturday.

“As I look forward to San José State, this is a big game. We’re already fired up about it because it’s senior day and that’s an important day. We make a little bit of a bigger deal about it around here and I know we always play well on senior day. We’re motivated to send this senior class out undefeated. There has only been three other teams that have been 6-0 in 126 years of Utah State football. When you have a season where you go undefeated at home, you could have a special season overall. We’re putting ourselves in a position to continue to do that,” said Wells.
