SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Without the help of Donovan Mitchell, the Utah Jazz fell to the Memphis Grizzlies 110-100 Friday night.

With the loss, the Jazz remained winless at home to begin the 2018-19 season.

With Mitchell Out, Jazz Struggle

Rookie Grayson Allen got in the start in place of the injured Mitchell, who was ruled out with hamstring soreness. Allen finished with nine points with a pair of 3-pointers made.

The Jazz offense roared to 60 points in first half and took a seven point lead into the locker rooms for the break. Unfortunately for Utah, the Grizzlies put on a lid on the rim and held the Jazz to just 40 points the rest of the way. In the second half, the Jazz were outscored 57-40.

When asked about the effectiveness or lack thereof of the offense, head coach Quin Snyder redirected his thoughts to the defensive end.

“We can talk about the offense, to me, our group has to stake its claim on the defensive end,” said Snyder. “No matter who’s out there, that’s what we can control…that will help us going the other direction. We’re not going to make every shot, you hope we hit more than we did, but the defensive end is where we have to put our focus.”

This season, the Jazz have allowed 100-plus points by their opponent in six of eight games.

By The Numbers

The Grizzlies’ Mike Conley led the game in scoring with 28 points. Marc Gasol turned in double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Former Jazzman Shelvin Mack had a strong outing with 19 points off the bench.

Rudy Gobert’s season long streak of double-doubles came an end as he finished with just 9 points to go along with 16 rebounds. Ricky Rubio turned in a double-double and led the Jazz in scoring with 22 points to compliment his 11 assists. Joe Ingles hit his 500th career 3-pointer in the loss.

Next Up

The Jazz will next head to Denver to face the Nuggets on Saturday at 7 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on AT&T SportsNet.
