SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The first round of the 5A playoffs has come and gone with early upsets (Timpview-Highland), last-minute thrillers (Viewmont-Provo), and some blowouts (Corner Canyon-Murray).

Region 7 has three teams left, regions 5 and 8 each have two teams remaining, and region six has just one team standing as the tournament enters quarterfinal play.

Here Are The Quarterfinal Matchups For 5A

Region 8 No. 1-seed Skyridge Falcons (9-1, 5-0) vs Region 7 No. 2-seed Jordan Beetdiggers (6-4, 4-1)

Skyridge rolled in the opening round against Farmington winning 56-7 against the Phoenix bringing a close to their inaugural season. Quarterback Jayden Clemons threw for four touchdowns and ran for one while running back Ma’a Notoa rushed for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

Jordan is looking for revenge for last year’s 45-43 loss in the quarterfinals against Skyridge. Jayden Clemons threw for three touchdowns in the game and Jordan’s Jake Shaver rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns while hauling in three passes for 92 yards and another touchdown. The Beetdiggers won big against the defending state champions, Lehi, in the first round. Shaver ran for 198 yards and six touchdowns in the 56-28 win.

Region 5 No. 1-seed Roy Royals (8-2, 4-1) vs Region 7 No. 3-seed Timpview Thunderbirds (7-3, 3-2)

Known for its offense, the Roy defense came to play in the first round. The Royals pitched a shutout and held Maple Mountain’s quarterback to just three completions on 21 pass attempts while recording three interceptions. Quarterback Jaxson Dart threw two touchdowns while Cade Harris added another two scores on the ground. Friday’s game is the first matchup between the teams since 2014 when Timpview beat Roy in the state championship game.

Timpview got a big first round win against Highland putting up 21 points in the first quarter. The Thunderbirds rushed for 321 yards and three touchdowns in the win while holding Highland to just 10 points.Timpview is looking for its first appearance at Rice-Eccles Stadium since 2015 where it lost to East in the championship game.

Region 6 No. 1-seed Olympus Titans (11-0, 5-0) vs Region 8 No. 3-seed Springville Red Devils (6-5, 2-3)

Olympus’ defense has led the way in 2018 and it was no different against Alta in the 27-6 first round win the first playoff win for the Titans since 2013. The Titans’ defense recorded four interceptions paced by Noah Bennee who recorded two while also hauling in two touchdown receptions. Springville and Olympus met up in the first round of the 5A tournament in 2017 with the Red Devils coming out on top 28-14.

Springville has plenty of state tournament experience and it showed in an ugly win against Box Elder in the first round. After the Bees took a 7-0 lead, Springville would score 17 points in the second and third quarter in the win. Quarterback Payton Murphy threw for two touchdowns including an 80-yard bomb to Trae Hillstead en route to the win.

Region 7 No. 1-seed Corner Canyon Chargers (9-0, 5-0) vs Region 5 No. 3-seed Viewmont Vikings (7-3, 4-1)

Corner Canyon continued its offensive onslaught in the first round against Murray winning 70-3. Star quarterback Cole Hagen threw for 395 yards and four touchdowns and four Chargers combined for five rushing touchdowns. John Mitchell showed his prowess as a deep threat hauling in four receptions for 187 yards and two touchdowns and Josh Wilson – younger brother of BYU quarterback Zach Wilson – found the end zone with a pick-six in the second quarter. Corner Canyon looks to make its second consecutive trip to Rice-Eccles in its first ever matchup against Viewmont.

Winning on the road is tough in high school football, and it’s even tougher when you trail 14-0 after two quarters of play. Despite that, Viewmont was able score 17 second half points against Provo including a last-second 28-yard field goal from the leg of Gabe Johnson which secured the win for the Vikings – the school’s first playoff win since 2011. Viewmont relies heavily on the legs of quarterback Dutcher Lines and running back Robert Summerhays who combined for 64 carries, 288 yards, and two touchdowns in Friday’s win.
