BYU Gets Exhibition Win Over Saint Martin’s

PROVO, Utah – The BYU Cougars got back on the hardwood in a season-opening 92-71 exhibition win over Saint Martin’s at the Marriott Center.
In a wire-to-wire win over the Saints, who play in Division II, the Cougars built what was at most a 25-point lead. BYU shot a solid 57.9 percent from the field Wednesday night, but also had a poor night at the free throw line, shooting just 67.7 percent on the freebies.
Childs Plays Well
Yoeli Childs led all scorers with 20 points while shooting 7-for-10 from the field. After practicing and playing against his teammates all offseason, Childs was happy to playing against someone else.
“You practice and play against the same guys for six months straight, you know what they’re going to do, you know how everybody plays. We’re lucky to get this exhibition games to get to play other guys,” said Childs.
Emery On Bench, Doesn’t Play
After sitting out last season for personal reasons and receiving a 9-game suspension from the NCAA for receiving improper benefits, BYU junior guard Nick Emery was eligible to play in the exhibition game. However, he did not suit up for the Cougars and joined his teammates on the bench in street clothes.
Classy Move By BYU
Prior to tip off, the Cougars held a moment of silence for deceased University of Utah track and field star Lauren McCluskey, who was shot and killed on the Utah campus Monday night.
Next Up
The Cougars will next host in-state Westminster College on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Marriott Center. The game will be broadcast on BYUtv.
