LOGAN, Utah – In a rematch of last season’s Arizona Bowl which New Mexico State won in dramatic fashion, Utah State won big with a 60-13 victory Saturday night at Maverik Stadium.
Trailing only briefly at 7-6, Utah State retook the lead for good at the 4:19 mark of the first quarter with a electrifying 100-yard kickoff return by Savon Scarver. From there, the Aggies rolled past the other Aggies to a 47-point victory.
Utah State kicker Dominik was fantastic. He set a new USU and Mountain West Conference for points scored by a kicker with 24. The mark also ties an NCAA record. He went a perfect 6-for-6 on field goal tries for the night, including three from 51 yards outs.
“I’m really excited for our team. Great win on really all three phases,” head coach Matt Wells said. “The goal was to come in here and be really great at special teams, and I thought we did that.”
Utah State had a strong game on the ground, gathering a team total of 274 rushing yards. Gerold Bright led the ground attack with 134 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown. Aaron Wade led a stingy Utah State defense with two interceptions. Deante Fortenberry also had a pick for the Aggies, which he returned for 75 yards to put them in great field position for a score.
Next up for Utah State is a home game against Tennessee Tech Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at Maverik Stadium.
