SALT LAKE CITY – Former BYU Cougars and current San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner plans to wear special cleats honoring his Mexican heritage during a game in Mexico City.
The Niners will play the Arizona Cardinals at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Monday, November 21.
The former BYU star will wear custom-made cleats for the Monday Night Football game.
Warner’s cleats feature red, white, and green colors like the Mexican flag. On one cleat is written “Yo Soy Fred.” The other cleat features the NFL’s Mexico game and the trademark “Hecho en México” logos.

NFL Mexico Games
The 49ers vs. Cardinals game will be the fourth regular season game played in Mexico since 2016. The majority of international games have been played in London, England. Munich, Germany hosted a contest for the first time in the regular season during Week 10.
San Francisco and Arizona will both make their second trip to play each other south of the border. The Cardinals beat the 49ers, 31-14, in Mexico on October 2, 2005. The most recent game in Mexico was in 2019.
2018’s NFL game at Estadio Azteca was moved because of poor field conditions.
