Utah ranks the highest in the college football tiers, Big Game Boomer rating them as a college football playoff team.
The optimism stems from the return of Cam Rising at quarterback and an offense that has gotten rave reviews throughout training camp.Â
The Utes also boast what looks to be one of the top defenses in college football led by draft prospect Clark Phillips III and two veteran pass rushers in Junior Tafuna and Van Fillinger.

Big Game Boomer has BYU ranked as a college football playoff contender. The Cougars roster also looks stacked with talent this season as QB Jaren Hall returns as the starter.
Puka Nacua begins his second season at wide receiver alongside Gunner Romney, in what the Cougars believe to be one of the best pass-catching duos in the country. The Cougars are also held together by a group up front that the coaching staff believes rolls potentially eight deep at the offensive line.

The Cougar’s biggest point of concern is a disappointing defense that only registered 20 sacks last year and returns most of the same players. When BYU had its greatest success in 2020 with Zach Wilson the defense was a top 25 group in the nation, that group took a nose dive last year.
With huge games on the schedule like Arkansas, Notre Dame, and Baylor, the defense will need to improve to catapult the Cougars into this tier.
Utah State sees themselves fall into the conference contender tier after a season that saw them go from a team projected to get just three wins, to Mountain West Conference Champions.
Logan Bonner returns at QB for the Aggies as new pass-catching weapons, Brian Cobbs (Maryland) and Xavier Williams (Alabama) join the Aggies from the portal.
For all the pre-conceived concerns about the Aggie wide receiving core, the real question lies on defense where team leader Justin Rice has now graduated.
The Aggies added Miami safety Gurvan Hall from the transfer portal. AJ Vongphachahnh has gotten rave reviews at linebacker out of camp by head coach Blake Anderson, who believes the senior linebacker will be a major defensive leader this year.
ICYMI, head coach Blake Anderson joined Hans and Scotty G this past Tuesday, while QB Logan Bonner joined the duo on Thursday.

The key to success though is Anderson, one of the hottest young coaching names in the nation. It should be expected that Anderson gets major consideration from bigger schools this off-season if Utah State has any semblance of success this year. Anderson is viewed by many as the next big thing in coaching.
