Toronto begins its summer league schedule on Saturday, July 9, at 1:30 p.m. (MT) against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Alex Barcello was a three-year star at BYU
A three-year standout for BYU, Barcello transferred to the Cougars from the University of Arizona. While at BYU, Barcello was a two-time All-WCC performer who racked up 1,319 points in his career.
Barcello took advantage of a free year of eligibility caused by the COVID-19 pandemic last season to earn an NBA opportunity. He has that chance after going undrafted in Thursday night’s NBA Draft.
BYU has had a recent history of undrafted prospects earning opportunities in the NBA. Most notably, Elijah Bryant became an NBA Champion last year with the Milwaukee Bucks after years of grinding overseas in Israel. Bryant got on the Bucks’ radar with impactful performances for the Bucks summer league team in 2019.
Last season at BYU, Barcello averaged 16.8 points per game while shooting 45.1% from the field and 42.1% from three-point range. ESPN’s Jay Bilas dubbed Barcello the “Best Shooter in America.”
During Barcello’s three years at BYU, the Cougars posted a 68-26 record. Barcello started in all 94 of those games.
BYU reached the NCAA Tournament in 2021, and they were well on their way to earning a bid in 2020 before COVID-19 took away the tournament. Last season, BYU finished in the Quarterfinals of the NIT.
