Three American Women Advance In Thousand Meter Speed Skating

SALT LAKE CITY – A soft ice surface led to a number of falls in the women’s speed skating short track 1000 meter qualifying heats.
The women’s speed skating short track 1000 meter qualifying heats were held at the Capital Indoor Stadium on Wednesday, February 9.
It was a wild day of short track speed skating that saw the 1000m Olympic short track record broken- TWICE – and all three American women advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals.
The Olympic record stood for about ZERO heats!

In the third heat of the day, Salt Lake native Corinne Stoddard advanced when she finished third.
American favorite Kristen Santos, who currently resides in Salt Lake, won her heat with a time of 1:28.237, advancing to the next round.
But the race of the day came in the sixth heat when Salt Lake resident Maame Biney rounded the final corner in fourth place and appeared well on her way to being eliminated.

That was before five-time Olympic medalist Kim Boutin fell and Maame used the brief confusion to slip in front, winning the heat by three one-thousandth’s of a second.
The women’s speed skating short track 1000 meter quarterfinals are scheduled for Friday, February 11 at 4 a.m. (MDT).
