On Tuesday, Gonzales was named to the 2022 Naismith Trophy midseason team. Gonzales was part of a group of 30 women that are in the running for women’s college basketball’s most prestigious award.
Shaylee Gonzales is leading BYU to new heights
The 5-foot-10 guard has started in all 21 of BYU’s games this season and is averaging 18.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.1 assists while shooting 49.5% from the field per game.
Gonzales is one of only two players on the Naismith Trophy midseason team to come from a team outside of a power conference. The other is Kierstan Bell at Florida Gulf Coast in the Atlantic Sun Conference. BYU plays in the West Coast Conference, and currently is in first place for the regular-season league title.
Gonzales is the reigning Co-Player of the Year in the WCC and is in a position to claim the top player honors in the conference again this season.
No. 20 BYU and Gonzales return to action this Thursday night when they take on Pepperdine at the Marriott Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
