Sergio Córdova Has Real Salt Lake Buzzing With Excitement Entering 2022 Campaign

SALT LAKE CITY – Newly acquired Real Salt Lake forward Sergio Córdova has provided a spark within the club just weeks prior to the start of the 2022 Major League Soccer campaign.

“Physically he is very strong, he is a big body,” Real Salt Lake General Manager Elliot Fall said. “He will create some physical mismatches in our league but he is also very athletic. Strong, fast, and a very technically gifted player,” Fall added.

Fall also explained how the new ownership group impacted the arrival of Córdova by stating that when David Blitzer took over at Real Salt Lake he informed the club that Córdova was available for loan much to the excitement and desire of Real Salt Lake.

Córdova joined Real Salt Lake in Tucson, Arizona, and got “three to four training sessions” with the main group before going down with an undisclosed injury during a recent club scrimmage.

Manager Pablo Mastroeni admitted that Córdova will need to find a solid fitness foundation before he finds the form that he is capable of.

Furthermore, as soon as Córdova heard from his agent that Real Salt Lake was interested in his services he made a phone call to former Real Salt Lake winger Jefferson Savarino. Both Savarino and Córdova are Venezuelan and have spent time playing alongside one another on the national team. Fortunately, Savarino gave nothing but raving reviews which further enticed Córdova to commit to Real Salt Lake.

It remains unknown what position Córdova will play in 2022. However, given the current roster, it would seem likely that most of the minutes that Córdova will see will be on the wing. Bobby Wood and Rubio Rubin proved their worth in 2021 at the point of the attack, Damir Kreilach will solidify the number 10 role but the loss of Albert Rusnák leaves a hole in the side.

On February 27th, Real Salt Lake will open their 2022 MLS season on the road against Houston Dynamo before hosting Albert Rusnák and the Seattle Sounders at Rio Tinto Stadium on March 5.
