Three Local Programs Ranked In Gymnastics Preseason Poll
SALT LAKE CITY – Three in-state programs earned recognition in the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) preseason poll announced on December 17.
The Red Rocks came in at No. 4, receiving the third-most first-place votes with eight. This is the second year in a row that the Red Rocks begin the season as the fourth-ranked team and the fifth consecutive season in the top five. Utah aims to improve on a disappointing third-place finish at the 2021 NCAA Championship Finals.
BYU received a top 20 ranking as well, coming in at No. 19, a two-spot drop from 2021 when they opened the year 17th. The Cougars received 1208 points in the poll, placing them behind the Iowa Hawkeyes and in front of the Iowa State Cyclones.
The Southern Utah Thunderbirds rounded out the top 25, coming in with 864 points.
The Utah State Aggies just missed out on the top 25, beginning the season as the 26th ranked team in the nation.
All four programs begin their 2022 season at the Rio Tinto Best of Utah meet on Friday, January 7 at 7 p.m. (MDT). The meet will be held at the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah, and will be televised on BYUtv.
