The United States made a statement defensively to start the game by going on a 21-6 run in the first seven minutes of the first quarter. When Mitchell checked into the game for Australia, she knocked down a three to end the run. Team USA has a 26-12 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Mitchell got an offensive rebound and drilled a contested three-pointer to put the Opals within nine points. Australia started to get things going in the second but had too big of a hole to get out of as the U.S. outscored Australia 22-15 in the second to take a 48-27 halftime lead.
Mitchell finished the first half with a team-high 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting from the field and 3-for-7 from downtown.
The third quarter was tough for the Opals as they were outscored 20-12 and at that point the game was out of reach.
