SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former Ute Leilani Mitchell and the Australian Women’s Basketball Team are out of the Tokyo Olympics after losing to Team USA.

The United States knocked off Leilani Mitchell and Australia 79-55 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday night.

Mitchell finished the game with a team-high 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the field and 4-for-10 from the three-point line in 23 minutes.

Breanna Stewart led Team USA with 23 points.

The United States made a statement defensively to start the game by going on a 21-6 run in the first seven minutes of the first quarter. When Mitchell checked into the game for Australia, she knocked down a three to end the run. Team USA has a 26-12 lead at the end of the opening quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Mitchell got an offensive rebound and drilled a contested three-pointer to put the Opals within nine points. Australia started to get things going in the second but had too big of a hole to get out of as the U.S. outscored Australia 22-15 in the second to take a 48-27 halftime lead.

Mitchell finished the first half with a team-high 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting from the field and 3-for-7 from downtown.

The third quarter was tough for the Opals as they were outscored 20-12 and at that point the game was out of reach.
