SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former Utah Utes and NFL wide receiver and current NFL Network analyst Steve Smith took some jabs at BYU QB Zach Wilson.
Steve Smith was on the NFL Network on Thursday afternoon previewing the 2021 NFL Draft, which includes BYU QB Zach Wilson, who is expected to go No. 2 to the New York Jets.
When the NFL Network crew was talking about Wilson and the Jets, the host asked Smith if he had any thoughts on the BYU quarterback.

Smith responded with the following while wearing a Utah Utes hat and a red suit jacket on the set.
“As a Utah alum and seeing Zach Wilson lose multiple times against Utah,” Smith said. “I think he has a great opportunity to continue that losing streak – back when he was at BYU – with the Jets.”

Wilson started in two games against the Utes and was never able to beat the heated rival. In 2018 at Rice-Eccles Stadium, Wilson was fantastic in the first half and midway through the third quarter, giving the Cougars a 27-7 lead. The Utes came all the way back to beat BYU 35-27. Wilson went 20-of-29 passing for 204 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while rushing for 73 yards.
In 2019 in Provo, Wilson completed 21 of his 33 pass attempts for 208 yards and two interceptions. Both of those interceptions were taken to the house by Francis Bernard and Julian Blackmon. Utah beat BYU 30-12. The two teams didn’t meet in 2020 due to COVID-19.
