SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah football held their scrimmage of spring camp on Friday afternoon and head coach Kyle Whittingham gave a pecking order at key positions.
The two big battles in spring going into the scrimmage for Kyle Whittingham and Utah football is the quarterbacks and the running backs. Utah ran about 130 snaps plus some special teams work on Friday afternoon.
Whittingham was asked how the reps were spread out to the quarterbacks.
“Charlie Brewer got the vast majority of the reps and that’s been the case all spring,” Whittingham said. “That’ll be the case during these last six practices. The other reps were divided almost equally between the other four. Ja’Quinden Jackson and Pete Costelli get a little bit more than the other two. But that’s pretty much the way things have been spread out repetition wise throughout the spring and again, don’t see that changing in these last six practices.”
Whittingham then touched on the running back reps.
“Top three continue to be Micah Bernard, as the number one guy right now,” Whittingham mentioned. “TJ Pledger, Chris Curry battling for that number two, spot, two and three. They’re jockeying for position. One day, one of them will have a better practice than the other then vice versa. Charlie Vincent’s doing some good things as possible number four. We also have (Elvis) Vakapuna in the backfield, that’s doing some good things. Faysal Aden is also taking reps. So those are the six guys that are getting the reps, but the top three are getting probably 75 percent of the reps overall. Of course, we have Ricky parks this summer to round out that position group.”
Charlie Brewer got the vast majority of the reps. The rest were divided equally with JJ and Peter.
RB's – Micah Bernard No. 1. Pledger and Curry are battling for No. 2. Pretty even race. #GoUtes @kslsports

Whittingham also mentioned that Brewer and Cam Rising will split the reps in fall camp in August. Rising is currently rehabbing his shoulder injury that he suffered in the 2020 season opener against USC.
