BYU released a video showing off the new helmets that were shot atop mountains above the Sundance resort.
This will be the first time BYU will wear blue helmets since the 1999-2004 seasons when the Cougars switched to navy blue as their helmet color.
“It’s been exciting to see the reaction of the players as we introduced these new helmets that are part of their future but based on our proud past,” said BYU head coach Kalani Sitake. “BYU’s football tradition was built through many decades of success by those who wore the uniform representing the Cougars. Our players, former players, and Cougar Nation all value this great tradition of BYU football. We want the helmet and various uniform combinations to honor those who built the program and inspire those who will carry it forward.”
In the video to unveil the helmets was BYU safety Chaz Ah You and running back Tyler Allgeier. Ah You and Allgeier will be two of the top players in the BYU football program for the 2021 season. Allgeier was the first 1,000-yard running back since Jamaal Williams in 2016. Ah You is a former four-star recruit who is expected to take on a big role in BYU’s secondary as he comes back from a lower leg injury.

BYU football has had a renewed focus on their equipment staff, referring to it as the “Player Experience” staff as well. Equipment director Billy Nixon has utilized the feedback from players to be involved in the process when it comes to making changes to the helmets.
Last year, BYU wore different uniform combinations in all but two games during their 11-1 2020 campaign that resulted in the school’s highest final ranking since 1996.
BYU opens spring practice for the 2021 season on Monday. The Cougars open the 2021 season against Arizona at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on September 4th.
