SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Major League Soccer’s primary transfer window is open today and runs through May 4th.
Real Salt Lake can now let the ink dry on acquisitions that will hopefully better the squad in 2021.
Without question, RSL knows that there are position groups that need some tender love and care; depth at left-back, another center back, and a striker are all position needs for RSL and its front office this transfer window.
Furthermore, RSL will likely go without replacing former designated player Sam Johnson due to the lack of ownership the club is facing.
Under Dell Loy Hansen, the club was incredibly frugal when it came to purchasing players. Hansen’s main focus and priority was with the Academy and the future of the club, not necessarily the present.

Nonetheless, the club, thanks to General Manager Elliot Fall, has put a large chunk of money aside knowing that there will be a time to spend it.
That time is now.
RSL can return to the playoff picture in 2021 without acquiring a designated player. Targeted Allocation Money and General Allocation Money can be used instead to purchase numerous quality players that will make an impact.
Damir Kreilach, for example, was signed using Targeted Allocation Money. Nedum Onuoha was signed without TAM or GAM.
The world is filled with talented soccer players who could make a difference at RSL if they are found.
The following three months are vital for the success of RSL in 2021, a good transfer window and the club can quickly return to the top of the Western Conference. But a poor showing and many key figures within the club will have their heads on the chopping block.
