PROVO, Utah – BYU football has taken a fall in the latest College Football Playoff rankings. The Cougars dropped to No. 18 in the College Football Playoff committee’s rankings that were released on December 8.
BYU fell five spots from 13 to 18 after a 22-17 loss to Coastal Carolina. That Coastal Carolina team, which sits at 10-0 this season, moved up five spots to the spot BYU was in at No. 13.

BYU falling to No. 18 confirms that any hope for a New Year’s Six bowl is out the window for the Cougars. The Chanticleers, if they want to crack into a New Year’s Six bowl, they’ll need to get to at least No. 11 in the rankings.
ESPN’s David Pollack on the topic of BYU during the made-for-tv Playoff Rankings reveal, “I’d like to apologize to the Committee about BYU. Because they were right. ”

BYU has one game remaining on the 2020 schedule against San Diego State. A win over the Aztecs isn’t expected to help the Cougars’ case towards getting back in the New Year’s Six conversation.
This is the third all-time appearance for BYU in the College Football Playoff rankings. All three appearances have come during this season.
