PROVO, Utah – Former Utah head football coach Urban Meyer was never supposed to like BYU. It’s been 16 years since Meyer was last on the sideline for the Utes. Time heals feelings.
In 2020, a year of unexpected outcomes, Coach Meyer is a big fan of this BYU football team.

During FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff pregame, Urban, Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, and Brady Quinn were breaking down the unbeaten BYU and Coastal Carolina battle. Meyer, who was impressed with the willingness of both Kalani Sitake and Coastal’s Jamey Chadwell for being willing to take on this game, can’t help but like what he sees from BYU.
“Here’s about BYU, and this as a former Ute, it’s hard to say this because I was not supposed to like BYU. BYU is not a good team; they’re a great team,” said Meyer.
Urban Meyer believes BYU should be ranked higher
Meyer has been an advocate for BYU in 2020 during his coverage on FOX. The Cougars are currently ranked No. 13 in the College Football Playoff, five spots lower than where they sit in the AP and Coaches Polls.
“When you push play [on film], they play really hard and really fast. That’s a credit to leadership and the coaching staff. They should be ranked higher than they are; they’re a really good football team.”
A win over Coastal Carolina should put BYU in a position to be in the at-large pool for a New Year’s Six bowl bid. But nothing is guaranteed. If only BYU had an advocate like Urban Meyer in the Committee room, maybe the Cougars would climb the College Football Playoff rankings.
BYU has a chance to make a statement to the committee on Saturday against 9-0 Coastal Carolina today at 3:30 p.m. from Conway, South Carolina. The game will be televised on ESPNU and can be heard on the legacy home of the BYU Cougars, KSL NewsRadio.
