Matt Haarms Named To Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award Watch List

PROVO, Utah – BYU C Matt Haarms has been named to the watch list for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award.
The annual honor, in its seventh year, is given to the top center in college basketball.

Haarms, who transfered from Purdue in April, is a 7-foot-3 senior looking to show out in his final year with a chance to get to the NBA. He is one of 20 players named to the watch list.
Haarms averaged 8.6 points and 4.6 rebounds last season for the Boilermakers. He ranked fifth in the Big Ten with 2.0 blocks per game. He has received hype during the offseason, including appearing on lists of the top college basketball players this season.
The Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award winner will be announced on April 9, 2021. Previous winners include another watch list member, Luke Garza from Iowa, as well as Utah big man Jakob Poeltl.

In Mark Pope’s second season as the head coach of BYU, the Cougars will look to build upon the success of last season. New names will look to lead the team this season, like Matt Haarms and UVU transfer Brandon Averette. Alex Barcello, who was named to the preseason All-WCC team, will also play a big role in his senior season.
