49ers Linebacker Fred Warner Activated From COVID-19 List, Voted Team Captain

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former BYU and current San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner was activated from the organization’s Release/COVID-19 List and selected as a team captain.
The Niners announced that the former Cougar linebacker had been activated from the list on Wednesday, September 9.
Warner was placed on the franchise’s Release/COVID-19 List in late August.

Fred Warner Named Niners Captain
Also on Wednesday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced Warner as one of the team’s seven captains for the the 2020 NFL season.
Shanahan listed the following players as captains for the Niners:
- Jimmy Garoppolo – Quarterback
- George Kittle – Tight End
- Mike McGlinchey – Offensive Tackle
- Trent Williams – Offensive Tackle
- Arik Armstead – Defensive Line
- Richard Sherman – Cornerback
- Fred Warner – Linebacker
Fred Warner’s NFL Career
Following his college days at BYU, Warner was selected by San Francisco during the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
In his first two NFL seasons, Warner has played in and started every game for the 49ers.
He’s recorded 242 total tackles, 174 solo tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, 7 quarterback hits, 4 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 1 interception, and a touchdown in 32 regular season games.
Last season, he helped the Niners win the NFC and reach Super Bowl LIV.
Fred Warner’s BYU Career
Prior to playing for San Francisco, Warner played collegiality at BYU from 2014-17.
During his time as a Cougar, the linebacker had 264 total tackles, 158 solo tackles, 6.5 sacks, 1 quarterback hit, 7 interceptions, and 5 fumble recoveries in 49 career games.
Warner received BYU’s Most Valuable Player Award and Captains Award in 2018.
