SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former BYU football and current New York Jets player Bronson Kaufusi moved positions from defensive end to tight end.

Jets head coach Adam Gase announced the move to reporters amid the Jets’ training camp in Florham Park, New Jersey.

Kaufusi, who has spent his NFL career on the defensive side of the football, will now be moving to the opposite side of the game to help New York’s offense.

In 2019, the Jets used Kaufusi as a tight end on their scout team.

“He was killing us on scout team last year,” Gase said of the former BYU defensive end.

Gase added that Kaufusi could see action for the Jets on both offense and defense in 2020 due to his versatility.

Last season, the Jets had a 7-9 record and finished in third place in the AFC East.

Kaufusi and the Jets are scheduled to open the 2020 NFL season against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, September 13 at 11 a.m. (MDT).

Bronson Kaufusi’s Career

Prior to his time in the NFL, the Provo native played football for BYU from 2012-15.

During his time with the Cougars, Kaufusi recorded 167 total tackles, 109 solo tackles, 31.5 sacks, 17 quarterback hits, 2 interceptions, and three fumble recoveries.

In 2016, the Baltimore Ravens selected Kaufusi during the third round of the NFL Draft.

He missed his entire rookie season after breaking his ankle in training camp. Kaufusi played for the Ravens from 2016-17.

In September 2018, Baltimore waived Kaufusi.

Shortly after getting released by the Ravens, the former Cougar joined the Jets’ practice squad.

Since then, Kaufusi has on and off New York’s roster.
