PROVO, Utah – BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe was on BYU’s athletic department Instagram page on Saturday as part of the school’s “Hanging With the Cougs” campaign amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The three-minute video was titled, “Walk with Tom.” Holmoe opened up the video wearing a BYU mask while walking along a sidewalk. While walking, Holmoe started to share memories of BYU’s historic win over SMU in the 1980 Holiday Bowl. The game aired on BYU Football’s Facebook page last night for fans to watch together.
After reminiscing about the Miracle Bowl, Holmoe shared a message on what BYU Athletics is doing during these unprecedented times.
“At BYU and athletics, we’re doing everything we can to be ready to go,” Holmoe said. “All our Cougar teams; our coaches, our players, our student-athletes, our fans, we’re going to be ready to go when they kick this back in.”
Tom Holmoe is excited for when BYU sports are back in action
Today marks the first day that most of the state of Utah has moved to a low-risk phase Yellow. BYU Athletics issued a statement earlier this week that athletic facilities on campus would remain closed through May and they would continue to follow directives from state and university officials.
“We’re grateful to Governor Herbert that he’s opening up the state a little bit — we’ll follow all the regulations — but our kids are chomping at the bit to get back and get ready for this season,” said Holmoe.
With no date established yet on when athletic facilities will re-open on campus, many have wondered when sports will resume again.
“We’re gonna play, I don’t know when. But we’re gonna play. And when we do it’s going to be beautiful,” he said. “Everybody can’t wait to get back. Break out the blue, rep the Y, break out Cosmo, whatever it is you do on your Cougar Saturday, it’s gonna be glorious.”
