Tua Tagovailoa’s Collegiate Career
Tagovailoa became a household name among college football fans when he stepped out on the game’s biggest stage and left that night a champion. At the time, Tagovailoa was the second-string quarterback for the Crimson Tide. Alabama’s starting quarterback was fellow 2020 NFL Draft entry Jalen Hurts.
The Crimson Tide were playing the Georgia Bulldogs in the National Championship Game of the College Football Playoff. As the two teams went into their locker rooms at halftime, Georgia held a 13-0 lead, and Hurts hadn’t led Bama to any points. Alabama head coach Nick Saban made a decision that would change not only his program that night, but in future seasons as well.
Hurts was pulled and Tagovailoa stepped onto the field. He proceeded to lead the Crimson Tide to 26 points including a 41-yard touchdown pass in overtime to beat the Bulldogs.
Both quarterbacks were on the Tide’s roster the following season. However, Tagovailoa was the team’s starter.
After the 2018 campaign, Hurts transferred to Oklahoma.
In 2019, the Tide were led by Tagovailoa until he suffered multiple injuries late in the season. Weeks after sustaining a high ankle sprain, the Alabama QB suffered a dislocated right hip with posterior acetabular wall fracture.
Tagovailoa had surgery and was ruled out for the remainder of the season. In January, he declared for the NFL Draft.
He finished his college career throwing for a completion percentage of 69 percent. He threw for 7,442 yards, 87 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 33 games played. Tagovailoa added 340 yards on the ground and 9 rushing touchdowns.
Despite the injury, Tagovailoa had been projected as a top 10 pick by many NFL Draft experts.
Tua Tagovailoa’s NFL Combine Measurements
Tagovailoa measured the following at the NFL Scouting Combine:
