Spring football is the start to the program preparing for the 2020 season. They will have 14 practices before holding their annual red vs. white spring game on Saturday, April 11 at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
The Utes will begin position battles and there are plenty of them. After an 11-3 season and their second trip to the Pac-12 Championship game in 2019, Utah lost a lot of starters, particularly on the defensive side of the football.
Utah will open the 2020 season on Thursday, September 3 against BYU at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
On defense, Utah lost three of their four starters on the defensive line, including Bradlee Anae, Leki Fotu and John Penisini. The Utes lost their only linebacker to graduation in Francis Bernard.
The Utes’ entire secondary has departed with safeties Julian Blackmon and Terrell Burgess, along with cornerbacks Tareke Lewis and Josh Nurse to graduation. Cornerbacks Javelin Guidry and Jaylon Johnson decided to forgo their senior seasons and enter the upcoming NFL Draft.
On offense, Utah lost quarterback Tyler Huntley, running back Zack Moss, wide receivers Derrick Vickers and Demari Simpkins and left tackle Darrin Paulo.
Finally, the Utes lost backup running back Devonta’e Henry-Cole, who transferred to BYU.
