PROVO, Utah – Days before the early signing period begins, BYU received some good news on the recruiting trail.
The good news came in the form of a commitment from three-star (247Sports) cornerback Micah Harper. On Monday night, Harper’s 18th birthday, the three-star prospect released a video on his personal social media announcing his intentions to sign with BYU.

Harper, who hails from Chandler, Arizona, fills a pressing need for BYU. One of the three areas of need in the 2020 recruiting class for the Cougars is cornerback. Harper at 5-11, 170-pounds has the measurables and potential that BYU’s secondary coaches in Jernaro Gilford and Preston Hadley have loved in evaluating recruits.
Gilford and Hadley like “swing” defensive backs that can play either cornerback or safety. Harper fits that billing like a Dayan Ghanwoloku or a Malik Moore. He can play a variety of positions in the secondary and will have an opportunity to compete for playing time in 2020.
Before going to social media to let the masses know of his commitment, Harper made his pledge to BYU public with his teammates at Basha High at the team’s end-of-year banquet.
“I just wanted to thank everybody for welcoming me to the Basha program when I was a sophomore,” said Harper. “I [had] a lot of great ups and downs with y’all. Especially the senior class, just being there for me. I love lining with y’all. But for the next four to five years, I’ll be attending BYU.”

This commitment comes on the heels of Harper taking in an official visit to BYU over the weekend. The official visit put BYU to the top of Micah and his family’s recruiting list in a hurry.
According to 247Sports, Harper is the sixth-highest rated recruit in BYU’s 2020 recruiting class. Harper picked BYU over offers from Syracuse, San Diego State, and the military academies.
Harper is expected to sign his letter of intent with BYU this Wednesday during the Early Signing Period.
