PROVO, Utah – The University of Utah Women’s Basketball team needed overtime at the Marriott Center, but was able to grind out a 77-73 win over rival BYU.

An interesting night for Utah athletics as the men’s team won their game against UC Davis by the same score on Friday night.

True freshman Brynna Maxwell led the Utes with 18 points and 7 rebounds, while shooting 6-10 from the field and 4-7 from downtown in 33 minutes on the floor.

The Utes need a lot of big shots down the stretch and they were able to get that. They made a season-high 14 three-pointers on 32 attempts for 43 percent. Ola Makurat added 13 points and 6 rebounds, while knocking down 3 three-pointers. Julie Brosseau added 10 points, including a key three-pointer late in the fourth quarter to give the Utes a one-point lead. BYU took the lead back with a bucket before Dru Gylten made one of her two free throw attempts to tie, sending the game to overtime.

For BYU, Paisley Johnson scored a game-high 19 points, Sara Hamson chipped in 18 points and 7 rebounds with Babalu Ugwu contributing 12 points. The Cougars shot 41 percent from the field and 30 percent from the perimeter, while attempt just 9 free throws.

The Cougars dropped to 3-3 on the year. They will travel to Tempe to battle Arizona State on Friday, December 6 at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.

Utah improved their record to 4-3 on the season. They will return home on Thursday, December 5 to face Oral Roberts at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The game will tip-off at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast at utahutes.com.
