Wasatch Academy’s Richie Saunders Commits To BYU Basketball

MT. PLEASANT, Utah – Wasatch Academy guard and three-star recruiting prospect Richie Saunders announced his commitment to Mark Pope and the BYU basketball program on Wednesday night.

Saunders announced his decision via a live stream on Wasatch Academy Basketball’s Instagram account.

The Wasatch Academy star is a three-star prospect according to Saunders picked BYU over offers from Creighton, Utah State, Oregon State, and Utah. Heading into his senior season at Wasatch Academy, Saunders is the No. 3 ranked prospect from the state of Utah in the class of 2020 and is the 180th ranked prospect nationally.

Saunders hails from Riverton and stands at 6-5 and weighs 185-pounds. Two Saturday’s ago, Saunders and his family took in an official visit to BYU and watched the Cougar football team defeat the nationally-ranked Boise State Broncos.

The following week, Saunders and his family had an official visit to Utah State University before making his decision official on Wednesday night in front of his family and teammates.

Saunders is the second commit in BYU basketball’s 2020 recruiting class joining Salt Lake Community College sharpshooter Spencer Johnson.

Before enrolling at BYU, Saunders plans on serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After serving and completing his mission, Saunders will play for BYU in the 2022-23 season.

In two weeks, Saunders will sign his letter of intent to BYU on College Basketball’s early signing day on November 13th.

Saunders and the Wasatch Academy program begin the 2019-20 season on November 26th against Payson in Mt. Pleasant.
