Utah State Missed Many Opportunities To Score Against LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. – In Utah State’s 42-6 loss to No. 5 LSU at Tiger Stadium, the Aggies had many opportunities to make the game more competitive but couldn’t capitalize on their chances.

In just the first half, Utah State had five opportunities to either get the ball back or score a touchdown, but settled for a field goal.

The first one was when Cameron Haney picked off LSU quarterback Joe Burrows and returned it to the opposing seven-yard line. They were forced to kick a 30-yard field goal. Later in the game, USU forced the Tigers to turn the ball over on downs and had to kick a 48-yard field goal, despite those two missed opportunities, the Aggies trailed 7-6.

In the second quarter, Utah State was punting the ball away when LSU was penalized for roughing the kicker and kept the ball but USU quarterback Jordan Love threw an interception.

Finally, Utah State had LSU facing a third and 15 and the Tigers gained 19 yards.

On top of that, LSU fumbled the ball twice and recovered both of them.

It was a lopsided affair when looking at statistics. LSU had the ball for 41 minutes while the Aggies had possession for less than 19 minutes. The Tigers had 601 yards of total offense (353 passing and 248 rushing) compared to USU’s 159 yards (140 passing and 19 rushing).

Jordan Love completed 15 of his 30 pass attempts for 130 yards and three interceptions.

Aggies running back Gerold Bright had 8 carries for 18 yards. Wide receiver Jordan Nathan hauled in 4 catches for 51 yards.

Burrows finished with 344 passing yards, 5 touchdowns and one interception, while running the ball 10 times for 42 yards a score.

Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire racked up 72 yards on the ground. Wide receiver Justin Jefferson had 9 catches for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

Utah State falls to 3-2 on the season. They will have their second and final bye week of the season next week and will return to Mountain West Conference play on October 19 when they host Nevada. The start time and broadcast information is to be announced at a later date.
