SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Coach Rose is back! Well, sort of. Four months after announcing his retirement from the head coaching job of BYU men’s basketball, Dave Rose is back courtside as head coach of Team Fredette at The Basketball Tournament.
“I think it will just be fun spending a few days coaching hoops,” Rose said.
T.J. Fredette, brother of Naismith Award winner Jimmer Fredette, is the one who called Rose and asked if he would like to coach the team. The team will include Jimmer in a limited role as well as BYU’s all-time leading scorer Tyler Haws.
“Yeah, I’d like to get a few more guys,” Rose said. “The talent level of some of our former alumni is really, really good.”

The Coach Rose that will be leading Team Fredette is a much more relaxed coach than the intense man we saw throwing his jacket to the floor with the Cougars.
The last four months for Rose have been a nice getaway from the game.
“The fact that you don’t have that grind every day of putting the team together and practicing has been really different,” Rose said. “I like what we’re doing. Cheryl and I are traveling a lot and we’re spending a lot of time with our grandkids.”

Coaching the Cougars became increasingly more stressful for Rose as he juggled those responsibilities along with being present with his family and taking care of his health.
“A lot of it had to do with just managing our health situation. Trying to manage that and manage a team and manage a family I just realized it’s time for me to take a back seat to this thing and just enjoy other parts of our lives.”
Rose continues to see his doctor on a regular basis. Something that he has grown accustomed to over the past ten years. He said it’s something that he will continue to do indefinitely.
“Every six months I go in there and I get the thumbs up or the thumbs down which means we have to do something to get rid of this for a while. I’ll have that the rest of my life,” explained Rose.

For now, Rose just enjoys life with his wife and family. He plans to be in the stands as a fan at the BYU game on the road at his alma-mater Houston.
He also expects to go to the Maui Invitational where he will take full advantage of a Hawaiian vacation – relaxing on the beach and eating delicious food instead of worrying about his next big opponent.
