HARRISON, N.J. – After a strong first half performance, Real Salt Lake’s wheels fell off in the second half as the New York Red Bulls picked up a 4-0 victory at home.
The match was scoreless in the first half but the rout started in the 58th minute when the Red Bulls crossed the ball into the box and RSL defender Marcelo Silva deflected the ball past Nick Rimando for an own goal.
One minute later, Daniel Royer scored on a great through ball that left him one-on-one with Rimando and scoring the goal to put New York up 2-0.
That wasn’t all. Michael Murillo scored in the 64th minute and Omir Fernandez finished RSL off in the 83rd minute to get the 4-0 win.
New York had 62 percent possession, leaving Real with just 37 percent. They had 19 total shots, with 9 on goal, while RSL had 10 total shots and just 3 on target.
“The way we came out in the second half, the structure went out the window,” RSL head coach Mike Petke said after the match. “Three goals in seven minutes can’t happen.”
