TAYLORSVILLE, Utah – Herriman and West each claimed state softball championships with convincing victories on Thursday.
Herriman won its second consecutive 6A state title with a 9-3 win over Layton while West grabbed the 5A championship with a 17-4 thumping of Bountiful.
Trailing the Lancers 1-0 going into the bottom of the third inning, Herriman took the lead on a two-run home run by Libby Parkinson, who also pitched in the game. Once the Mustangs had the lead, they exploded to finish the inning, leading 6-1 after the third.

Herriman added a few more runs in later innings and Layton had two more in the seventh, but couldn’t close the gap as the Mustangs finished the tournament unbeaten.
West Wins Five Straight To Clinch Title
The road to the 5A title was much more difficult for West. After narrowly losing to Roy in the quarterfinals on Wednesday morning, the Panthers were forced to go through the one-loss bracket.
Facing elimination, the Panthers beat East, Farmington and Roy in order to advance into the championship series against Bountiful.

Needing to win twice to claim the championship, West was fantastic, winning the first game 12-2 and then 17-4 in the pivotal title game over the Braves.
Herriman and West join Tooele (4A), Grantsville (3A) and Enterprise (2A) as 2019 state softball champions.
