SANDY, Utah – Real Salt Lake midfielder Jefferson Savarino came close to scoring the first goal of the match against Atlanta United but his shot was saved and then deflected by the goal post.
The play was set up after RSL’s Donny Toia threw a wicked shoulder into an Atlanta defender while boxing out for position. Toia obtained possession of the ball and then passed it off to Savarino, who fired a shot on frame.

Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan dove for the ball and made the save, but the ball kept rolling and nearly found its way into the goal before being knocked aside by the goal post.
The Friday night matchup at Rio Tinto Stadium pits RSL against the defending MLS Cup champions in Atlanta United.
No Johnson In Starting XI
RSL head coach Mike Petke decided to keep striker Sam Johnson on the bench after the Starting XI in last week’s win over Toronto FC did well together. Johnson missed the match against Toronto FC after arriving late to a team meeting and was benched by Petke.
