PROVO, Utah – The BYU Cougars will remain wearing the Nike swoosh logo for quite some time.
The BYU athletics department announced seven-year extension of the school’s existing agreement with Nike to keep the Cougars in the Oregon-based company’s footwear, apparel and equipment through 2025-26.
BYU was a pioneer in wearing the ultra-popular brand by equipping the football team in Nike cleats in the late 1970s. The entire athletics program has since become an all-Nike school across all sports, but it began with a friendship between legendary head football coach LaVell Edwards and Nike founder Phil Knight.
"We’ve had a relationship with BYU for nearly 40 years now. We don’t have a better relationship in the country, than the one we have with BYU. We are very proud of it." – Phil Knight, Nike co-founder

“One of my fondest memories as a player, coach and administrator at BYU is our long-standing, great relationship with Nike,” athletic director Tom Holmoe said in a press release. “From the very start—when LaVell Edwards and Phil Knight became friends in the late 70s—to the present time, Nike has been a wonderful partner.”
The new deal with Nike will more than double the value of the previous deal and includes more cash compensation and royalties for the athletics program.
“We are very proud of our long-standing association with BYU Athletics,” Nike senior director of college sports marketing Kit Morris said. “We look forward to continued support of its student-athletes with Nike footwear, apparel, and equipment.”
