PROVO, Utah – The West Coast Conference has announced their regular season awards from the 2018-19 season. Three women received awards from BYU, ahead of their conference tournament in Las Vegas.
Freshman Shaylee Gonzales was named the West Coast Conference Newcomer of the Year. She becomes the third BYU player to receive the award since the Cougars joined the conference in 2012. Gonzales averaged a team-high 16.3 points this season. She finished the season as the only freshman in the WCC to finish in the top 18 in points per game or rebounds per game in conference play. Through 29 games, Gonzales scored in double figures in all but two games this season.
On top of her award, she was named to the WCC First Team and All-Freshman team.
The other two BYU players to win the award were Kalani Purcell in 2016 and Lexi Eaton Rydalch in 2012.
All-WCC Teams
Junior guard Brenna Chase was named to the WCC First Team after starting in all 29 games for the Cougars. She averaged 12.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 36 percent from the field and 35 percent from downtown.
Sophomore forward Paisley Johnson was named to the All-Conference Second Team after averaging 14.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game as she played in all 29 games this season.
