Head coach Mike Petke’s words earlier in the week proved to be the perfect preface to the unlikely result.
“Houston is capable of getting a result for sure … but obviously the favorite on this game is LA. But I’ve seen crazier things in this league in my 20 years,” Petke said to James Edward of the Deseret News on Thursday.
The scenario was simple, if the Galaxy lost or draw against Houston, RSL was in. If not, their season would come to an end.
Houston Gets The Comeback Win
The Galaxy held a 2-0 lead after the first half thanks to a pair of strikes by Ola Kamara. Fortunately for RSL, the Dynamo came alive in the second half starting with a goal by Romell Quioto. Later off a penalty kick, Mauro Manotas tied it up before scoring again in the 79th minute to take the lead. Houston held on to win and send RSL to the playoffs and LA packing.
LA star Zlatan Ibrahimovic was held scoreless after scoring in each of his last five matches.
