SALT LAKE CITY – BYU football place kicker Jake Oldroyd thanked fans for their “love and support” after he missed a pair of kicks during the Cougars’ win over the Baylor Bears.

The No. 21 Cougars hosted the No. 9 Bears at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday, September 10.

Due to some clutch kicks earlier in his college career, Oldroyd earned the nickname, “Jake the Make.” Despite a couple of late missed field goals by Oldroyd, BYU beat Baylor, 26-20.

The next day, the kicker thanked his teammates and BYU fans for their support. “Thanks everyone for all of the love and support. My brothers had my back last night. Next game. Next kick,” Oldroyd tweeted.

The Cougars had an opportunity to close out the contest in regulation. However, Oldroyd missed a 35-yard field goal with eight seconds left and the game went to overtime tied at 20-20.

BYU open the coin toss and chose to play on defense first. The Bears were unable to find the end zone and attempted a 43-yard field goal that was badly missed. The miss handed the Cougars another chance to win the game. BYU needed to make a field goal or score a touchdown to close out their top 10 opponent.

After three plays, Oldroyd was called upon for a chance at redemption. He missed another kick, this time from 37 yards. The miss sent the game into a second overtime.

BYU began the second overtime on offense. Four plays into the period, Cougar running back Lopini Katoa took the ball into end zone for six points and a 26-20 lead for BYU. By rule, the Cougars had to attempt a two-point conversion after the touchdown. BYU failed to convert on a pass from Jaren Hall to Issac Rex.

Up next, the Bears were given the ball and the chance to win with a touchdown and two-point conversion. BYU made the drive difficult. Baylor started at the BYU 25-yard line and ran 10 plays before facing a 4th & Goal from the 11-yard line. The Cougars came up with a stop every time they needed to on the drive and an incomplete pass sailed out of the back of the end zone to close out the game.

After the play, fans rushed the field and ESPN showed Oldroyd on TV. He was emotional as he was hugged and consoled by Hall.

Oldroyd finished the game 2/4 on field goals and 2/2 on PATs. With the win, BYU improved to a 2-0 record this season.

BYU’s next game is on the road against the Oregon Ducks on Saturday, September 17 at 1:30 p.m. (MDT). The game will be broadcast on FOX and KSL NewsRadio.
