SALT LAKE CITY – Real Salt Lake has believed in one and another for a long time now and following a 2-1 semifinal victory over Sporting Kansas City it appears that the state of Utah is beginning to believe again as well.

Footage surfaced online of a large group of passionate supporters crowding the team bus at Salt Lake City International Airport immediately following the return of the team from Kansas City.

Prior to the 2021 MLS season, Real Salt Lake was pegged to finish towards the bottom of the Western Conference.

With three games left in the regular season, they needed one more victory to cement a position in the postseason. They succumbed 4-3 at home to San Jose in a soul-crushing loss and then looked depleted in a less than impressive display against Portland.

But on Decision Day they travelled to Sporting Kansas City and did the unthinkable following a last-second goal from Damir Kreilach.

Then they had time to rest due to an international break which allowed the club to prepare extensively for a trip to Seattle.

Remarkably, Real Salt Lake defended for their lives for 120 minutes, generated zero shots and still found a way to win following a penalty shootout that lasted six rounds.

Today, the Real Salt Lake train gained momentum as they outplayed Sporting Kansas City, again, and earned themselves a date with Portland in the conference final.

The victory was the first postseason win against Sporting Kansas City in the club’s history having previously lost on four consecutive occasions while the game against Portland will mark the first conference final appearance for the club since 2013.

The club has believed in one and another for a long time now under interim manager Pablo Mastroeni’s leadership and now the Utah community is starting to dream.
