Salt Lake County Players of the Week – Faythe Stauffer, Riverton & Gavin Lowe, Olympus
Stauffer and the Riverton Silver Wolves looked to continue a strong start to the season as they took on Woods Cross High School in Week 2. Riverton would hold a 20-17 lead at halftime, but a 10-5 advantage in the third quarter tilted the game in the Wildcats’ favor and they went on to pick up a 43-41 victory. Stauffer tallied a game-high 21 points to go along with three rebounds, three steals and two assists in the loss.
Riverton would bounce back later in the week as they faced Skyridge High School in a non-conference game. The Falcons took a narrow 31-30 lead into the locker room at halftime, but Stauffer and her teammates emerged to play stingy defense and that keyed their second half surge to win the game 61-54. Stauffer finished the game with 25 points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals.
Lowe and the Olympus Titans welcomed Bingham High School looking to add another early season win. After trailing 23-13 at halftime, Olympus’ offense expoded for 26 third quarter points as they took a lead into the fourth quarter. The Miners would rally to tie the game and send it to overtime. In the extra period, Lowe became the hero as his buzzer-beating three lifted Olympus to a thrilling 59-56 victory. Lowe finished the contest with 25 points, five steals, four rebounds and two assists.
