SALT LAKE CITY- It’s a great time to be a Utah sports fan with the addition of the NHL and the Utah Hockey Club, but the Utah Grizzlies of ECHL are not to be forgotten with the holiday spirit in full effect in West Valley City.

The Utah Grizzlies played their last game before Christmas on Saturday night against the Tahoe Knight Monsters at the Maverik Center. To get into the spirit of the season, the Grizzlies debuted their special edition “Ugly Christmas Sweater” jerseys.

The special edition ugly sweaters were worn as part of a “Teddy Bear Toss” at the Grizzlies home game, where players and fans alike brought stuffed animals that were thrown onto the ice from the stands after Utah scored their first goal.

The goal came with about eight minutes remaining in the first period when Gianni Fairbrother put one away from the left dot. The goal cut the Knight Monster’s lead in half and started the momentum for the Grizzlies.

According to the team, the Grizzlies set a team record with 5,390 different stuffed animals thrown onto the ice and donated to less fortunate families during the holiday season.

The Utah Grizzlies went on to beat the Tahoe Knight Monsters in a comeback effort by a score of 6-4 thanks to a hat-trick from Neil Shea. The Utah Grizzles will be back in action on Friday, December 27, as they start a two-game home set against the Rapid City Rush.
