SALT LAKE CITY – The Weber State Wildcats dropped their second game of the season in a close loss to the undefeated Sacramento State Hornets.

The Wildcats hosted the Hornets at Elizabeth Dee Shaw Stewart Stadium on Saturday, November 5.

Weber State fell to Sacramento State, 33-30.

The Wildcats comeback attempt fell short despite scoring 16 points over the final 15 minutes of action. The Hornets controlled the scoreboard throughout the afternoon and the Wildcats never led Sacramento State, who improved to 9-0 with the three-point victory.

Sacramento State opened the game with a touchdown midway through the opening quarter. Weber State responded with touchdown connection between Bronson Barron and Jacob Sharp near the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Hornets outscored the Wildcats, 9-0. Two of Sacramento State’s second quarter points came on a safety by Weber State.

Both teams came out of the locker room at halftime and scored touchdowns in the third quarter. Weber State’s came on a touchdown pass from Barron to Justin Malone.

After a Hornet touchdown to start the final quarter, Weber State’s Abraham Williams returned a kickoff for 100 yards and six points to help the Wildcats in their attempt to catch up.

After a pair of field goals by both teams, a late touchdown by Barron trimmed Sacramento State’s lead to three points with 16 seconds to go.

Weber State was unable to recover an onside kick on the second to last play and had no timeouts remaining to stop the clock. Sacramento State took a knee in victory formation and captured the win.

Sacramento State finished with 431 yards of total offense compared to 319 yards by Weber State.

Barron finished the game 15/38 passing for 153 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Ty MacPherson was Weber State’s leading receiver with seven catches for 89 yards. Dontae McMillan carried the Wildcats on the ground with 17 rushes for 73 yards.

With the loss, the Wildcats fell to a 7-2 record, including 4-2 in Big Sky Conference games.

Weber State’s next game is at home against the Idaho State Bengals on Saturday, November 12 at 1 p.m. (MDT). The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
