SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former Utah quarterback, offensive coordinator and current Florida OC Brian Johnson has reportedly interviewed for the Boise State head coaching job.

The former Utah QB and play caller Brian Johnson is interviewing with Boise State to become a head coach for the first time in his career. Boise State is looking for a new head coach after Bryan Harsin accepted the same position at Auburn in the SEC.

Boise State beat writer B.J. Rains of The Idaho Press is reporting the Brian Johnson interview with the Broncos.

Johnson finished his first season as the offensive coordinator for the Florida Gators. They finished the 2020 campaign with an 8-4 record, including a loss to Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl. Johnson coached quarterback Kyle Trask, who is among the four finalists for the Heisman Trophy.

The Baytown, Texas native began his coaching career in 2010 as the quarterbacks coach for Utah. In 2012, he was promoted to offensive coordinator, where he held that position until 2013. Before the 2014 season, Johnson accepted the quarterbacks coach position at Mississippi State under former Utah QB coach Dan Mullen. In 2017, Johnson spent one season as the OC for the University of Houston. After Mullen was named the head coach at Florida, Johnson joined him in Gainesville in 2018 and was the quarterback coach for two seasons.

When Johnson was named the Gators’ offensive coordinator before the 2020 season, he became the first Black OC in Florida football history.

Johnson is one of the best quarterbacks to ever have played at the University of Utah. In 2008, Johnson led the Utes to an undefeated season, including a win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. It was Utah’s second BCS bowl win in school history. Johnson was named first team All-Mountain West, Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year and Sugar Bowl MVP in 2008.
