PROVO, Utah – The sign that another season of BYU football is upon us is “gear day.”
Gear day has become an annual tradition for the BYU program. Each year, new and old players receive a wave of fresh new apparel upon arrival at fall camp.
BYU has a new equipment director this season in Josh Hewitt from UNLV. Hewitt replaces Billy Nixon, who was moved to the Director of Football Operations spot left vacant after Jon Swift was elevated to a new Chief of Staff role.
Hewitt’s touch on gear day is that instead of having one big haul of clothes given to the players, he’s spreading out the gear drops throughout fall camp.

BYU football gets ready to “flip the switch” to 2022
The first wave of apparel that BYU players received included a navy blue long sleeve shirt, a royal blue t-shirt with the Sailor Coug on a barbell with weights on the front, and the caption, “FLIP THE SWITCH” on the back.
“Flip the switch” is a popular song by Quavo. Its popularity has grown as a sound on TikTok.
BYU players also received cleats, shoes, and a gray t-shirt.

All of the apparel that BYU received featured the Nike swoosh. Nike has been a partner of BYU athletics since the 1970s. The Nike swoosh has been featured on BYU’s football uniforms since the 1996 season.
Practice number one of fall camp will kick off Thursday afternoon at the Student Athlete Building. It’s the first step in preparations for BYU’s season opener on Saturday, September 3, against the USF Bulls in Tampa, Florida.
