PROVO, Utah – No. 16 BYU football will wear a black uniform against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Las Vegas.

BYU announced the new threads in a new video with a Vegas vibe, with magician Mat Franco and MMA fighter Forrest Griffin involved. In addition, star wide receiver Puka Nacua was featured in the video. Nacua has connections to UFC President Dana White from playing in the same youth leagues as White’s son.
The most noteworthy piece to BYU’s uniform that they will wear against Notre Dame is a new helmet that switches from royal blue to black at the bottom.

BYU’s history of wearing black uniforms
Ten years ago, BYU football rolled out black uniforms for the first time. Back then, “Blackout” games were popular in college football. So BYU took part in the trend and rolled out a black uni against Top-10 opponent Oregon State.
The helmet that season was also black with a white Oval Y decal, with the “Y” in royal blue. BYU also wore this same look in 2014 against UNLV.

Two years later, BYU rolled out the same Nike Vapor uniforms against Utah State on senior night in 2016. There was one change, however, the helmet featured a royal blue Oval Y.
Then in 2020, BYU dusted those threads off again and rolled them out for senior night against San Diego State. The uniform combination was in the running for a college football uniform of the year award.
BYU’s record on the gridiron in black uniforms is 3-1. They’ve never worn the blackout threads outside of LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo.
Notre Dame will wear a white uniform with gold trimmings
Notre Dame unveiled its uniform combination for the Shamrock Series matchup with BYU back in July.
The jersey and pants are white with gold trimmings. As Notre Dame put it, the gold ties into the “golden age of Las Vegas.”

Notre Dame has always worn alternate uniforms during their Shamrock Series games. The Vegas tilt with BYU falls under that banner as well. Typically Notre Dame’s opponents in the Shamrock Series games have donned alternate uniforms as well.
